The Oscars and the new age of storytelling

The idea and importance of storytelling represents an appeal to our deepest emotions. Great storytelling can be surprising and unexpected. As an authentic, creative expression it has the potential to make a deep personal connection and takes the audience on a journey.

Storytelling in the 21st century uses digital platforms and devices as outlets for creativity. Writing and storytelling with these nontraditional platforms in this new age is regarded by many as the next big thing.

The Oscars are known for doing a great job not just awarding the best storytellers, but also acknowledging great storytelling. With a variety of nominations from best screenwriting to best animated feature to best animated short feature, it was great to see some of our favorite films and stories celebrated, like Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansmen for best adapted screenplay and Bao for best animated short film.

Notably, there were two Oscar award-winning films that were not made for the big screen. Perhaps proving that nontraditional platforms are finally being rewarded in the same arenas as traditional ones. With Netflix original films like Roma winning three out of six Oscar nominations, and the documentary Period. End Of Sentence winning best documentary short, the increased success of non-traditional media is evident. (Shout out to The Pad Project!

Texties, a mobile app that uses text messages to tell deep and engaging narratives, understands the significance of these milestones. It builds storytelling skills and democratizes fiction publishing through the Texties Author platform allowing authors to tell stories that can gain an immediate audience.

But more importantly, it is a platform that gives all smartphone users the chance to read amazing narrative fiction in a unique digital format. Text messages have become a new medium for storytelling on chat fiction apps like Texties.

Much like the Oscar-nominated films that started with written scripts, Texties’ stories use dialog-driven storytelling. And award-winning pictures like A Star is Born that have deep romantic or dramatic plots can remind us of similar stories like Martha and the Music on Texties.

It’s official. Nontraditional platforms have broken through. Award-winning storytelling can be found on the big screen, on a computer, and now on mobile apps. Reading and writing fiction on Texties’ unique platform is an excellent way to connect with the world emotionally and authentically in the new digital age.
